Alaska Part 1: Tundra and Arctic Turf
WE NEED BEAUTY BECAUSE IT MAKES US ACHE TO BE WORTHY OF IT - Mary Oliver

---
Oh the tundra has stolen my heart!
Such delicate stuff
in the heart of something harsh and large and terrible.
Shining
Growing
LIVING
in midnight's sun.
The Arctic grows as we hope it does,
slow and deliberate,
green and gold over millennia.
At odds with ice
winters harsh foot securely stomped over her
for most of the year.
She wins for a few short weeks in June and July
I'm here to tell you it's quite the victory.
A comforting thought at the top of the world
on a fine summer day
in the middle of the most remote place I've ever been:
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the Brooks Range of Alaska.
